How Brexit has Created Challenges in the Digital World

The U.K left the E.U and its alliance with them that lasted almost 50 years, on 31 January 2020. The impacts of this spread beyond just trade and business, but also affecting people on personal levels, with some families being separated and relationships beyond our borders stagnating.

Our technologies had become integral to some of our businesses and ways of life. Even the digital trade we have become accustomed to, is challenged by these separations with the beginnings of regulations.

The Tech and digital sector is one of the U.K’s more modern success stories, with its Tech Companies worth over a combined 500 billion pounds. And these companies are going to have a lot of work cut out for them to integrate alongside these constitutional changes.

HOW IS THE DIGITAL WORLD AFFECTED?

The effects of Brexit has led to a lot of changes in the digital and tech world, from companies having to do a lot more paperwork, data management, free movement regulations and even scientific collaborations being challenged.

These changes in policy have affected many, many areas in the digital and tech world, I will list some below:

  • All the intellectual property rights are also subject to change, such as,
  • The impacts of trademark rights and the deals that go with them,
  • Design rights and the deals that go with them,
  • Copyright and the deals that go with them,
  • The telecoms and media industry will also be affected,
  • Even the consumer and commercial rights are having to change,
  • E-commerce industry is also subject to change,
  • Ideas and areas for outsourcing are also having to change,
  • Even data privacy is something of a concern,

With these changes, our Tech and digital leaders have a “to do” list as long as our receipts from Dischem and Lloyds pharmacy.

There are concerns over how these changes could impact potential business and growth in the Tech and Digital sector.

However, there are some who approach these changes with more optimism and opportunity for growth. Ideas for the country to become more dynamic and attractive to various Talents in the Tech and Digital field. With calls for a change in Visa rules to assist in this, as well as to help digital companies test and sell new types of services.

I suppose it would be best that we look at the challenges ahead with more excitement and pathways of digital and technological revolution and integral change.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR OUR DIGITAL FUTURE?

The U.K has been outside of the Digital single market strategy since 2018, and what is the D.M.S? The Digital Single Market strategy(D.M.S) was brought about to ensure better access for consumers and business to online goods and services across Europe, for example, by removing barriers to cross-border e-commerce and access to online content while increasing consumer protection.

This strategy was implemented to help cross border relationships in the digital world, but the Brexit decision has separated and kept the U.K outside of these supports, aids and relationships. But… the U.K are one of the biggest technological contributors in the world and when you compare the size of England to that of their technological competitors, it’s truly impressive.

But these measures, I’m sure, will only push the people of England to become more digitally independent and technologically unique.

As well, these changes in policy and government have challenged and tested the normality’s most people had become so accustomed to and which had become so profitable in terms of trade and the sharing of digital skills and information across borders.

Although these changes are still being discussed fully in parliament and with local governments, the people of England have already made strides to adapt to these fore coming changes. Calls for changes in visa requirements for people of Digital business and operations, some businesses have already moved and registered their bases outside of England, to avoid some of the constitutional change to come.

But when all is said and done, The digital and Technological world will be very difficult to control and monitor. As some of these technologies were specifically created due to the over control and strict regulations from Governments for so many years. The government will have an immense amount of work to do, to regulate something which has been unregulated since its creation. In fact, Governments were extremely encouraging of international Digital and Technological trade for Decades, profiting and helping secure their place as a Technological leader.
