Digital Transformation – Why Some People Are Fearful

The digital age began almost 50 years ago, with the first patented computer in 1973. Digital Transformation has changed and improved along with our applications of these technologies since.

From cutting down the bulkiness of devices, to drastically improving their functionality and accessibility. Huge amounts of information can be transferred and stored across the globe.

But with these improvements, there has also been a rise in feelings of apprehension for what these technologies could bring about in our future. As well as the fear, there has also been a number of problems that have risen alongside our journey into the digital future.

Let’s discuss some of these issues…

  • With the incredible innovation of worldwide sharing of information and access to information, there has also been a rise in data theft, and data security.
  • As well, piracy and copyright issues in movies, sports etc.
  • There has also been a rise in anonymity and privacy, which some people have used in some horrible ways
  • Alongside the previous point, a rise in crime and terrorism, digitally and globally. With people of these factions being able to communicate and organize terrible acts across the world.
  • There has also been a rise with internet scams and false deals/trade/promises being easier to hide identity from and/or disappear.
  • A rise in concerns of digital manipulation, from actual devices, to high powers and their misuse of these.
  • As well, a rise in addictions. In various kinds and types, from gambling, to videos games, to an over use of social media, these industries have benefitted massively in the digital age. The adult film industry has also seen a massive rise in users and therefor concerns for addiction as well.
  • There have also been concerns for an overreliance and dependency on these technologies, and where that might lead human kind.
  • We could argue that the use of these technologies for long periods of times has allowed a species to separate from the natural world, separate from manual labour, and created increased problems with our vision and eyesight.

There are many other downsides to the very promising digital realm that I haven’t mentioned, such a concern of job security, with many innovations easily cutting out human work and involvement. As well there is a surge in complexity in terms of tasks and repairs in these technologies etc. etc.

As much improvement has been made in human life, there has been a growing number of problems being created too. Separating social groups and cultures further.

This, I believe, is just another obstacle in our human evolution. And, looking in our past, we have seen the human species overcome, time and time again.
